Toront, ON– Boston (January 15, 2010) Boston traveled to the Air Canada Centre Friday evening to battle the Toronto Rock in their first away game of their 2010 season. The Blazers started off strong offensively as Daryl Veltman scored off an assist by Boston captain Dan Dawson at the two minute mark.
Scoring however lead to fighting as key members of both the Blazers and Rock were ejected just four minutes into the game. Veltman, Dawson, Brenden Thenhaus, and Nick Cotter as well as Toronto's Jeff Gilbert, Pat McCready, and Creighton Reid were all removed for the scuffle before the official's whistle.
Without their dominant scorers, Boston's bench was forced to step up including offensive action by Brett Queener and defenseman Mitch Belisle, both of whom scored off power plays to end the first half.
Toronto came out strong in the third quarter recording two quick goals making it 6-3 including one by Rock captain Colin Doyle. The Blazers fought back as Belisle, Matt Lyons, Gary Bining, and Ryan Hotaling all scored to tie the game at 7-7 at the end of the 4th quarter.
In the sudden death overtime, Boston fought hard until the last minute when Toronto's Garrett Billings knocked one in making the final 8-7. Bining led the team with one goal and three assists while Belisle finished with two goals. Goalie Anthony Cosmo dominated Boston's defense with 50 saves on 58 shots on goal and Toronto's Bob Watson recorded 36 saves on 43 shots on goal.
Boston travels to the Wachovia Center tomorrow night to face the Philadelphia Wings at 7:00pm. The Blazers return home to the TD Garden on Saturday, January 23rd at 7:30pm. For tickets, call 888-BLAZERS.
